The importance of proper muscle balance
Our muscles are a series of hydraulic pulleys that act on our bone structures to create movement by pulling the hinges (joints). For movement to occur one or more muscles must relax at the same time the moving muscles are contracting. If the muscles are unable to fully relax because they are in spasm, or they are weak because they have been contracted or overstretched the resulting movement will not only be weak, but will put strain in other muscles and in the joints of the body.
Muscles not only affect movement, they also affect our posture, chronically contracted muscles pull our head forward, hunch and rotate the shoulders, rotate our hips in ways that lead to pain, more spasm and as a result, even greater imbalance.
This lack of balance, known in orthopedic massage as a Postural Imbalance, creates a number of problems and can have long lasting, negative effects on our bodies. It greatly affects our bones, most commonly the vertebral spine, resulting in nerve impingements and bulging and herniated vertebral discs. It even creates bone deformities.
